More About the Community Group
Finningley is a great Village located near to Doncaster in South Yorkshire and we are very proud to live here. This website was created to help local people to find out what is happening and give a means for residents to share information with the rest of the village.
This Community Group exists to support the needs of the local community, we focus on arranging events and things to do for residents based on what they’ve asked us to do. The group isn’t politically biased and is independent from local government, we just want to help make the village special.
We used to hold a meeting on the first Tuesday of the month but in recent times we’ve decided to meet once a quarter in the Village Hall at 7.15pm. See the home page for the next meeting. Anyone is welcome to join us, it’s an informal process where we make plans and check progress of any events underway, we listen to any resident contributions and we’ll try to cover off any key issues that have arisen since our last meeting. We aim to provide residents with up to date information on this website and during our meetings.
The group is made up from local volunteers who give up some of their time to help organise and run community events, raise awareness of our projects.
How did we start?
In 2007 a “Parish Plan” was formed based on questionnaires sent to every household in the village. A group of dedicated volunteers has tried to action this plan and has achieved some great things, some of which are noted throughout this website.
The group has since helped to organise a number of regular activities for residents to take part in. We try to bring new ideas and plan more events and activities that people have told us they want to see or do.
We organise and run a number of regular groups which are a great way to meet people.
In the July 2016 we organised another Scarecrow Festival and invited residents of the village to take part and make a Scarecrow of their own! Details on our Scarecrow page here
The Spirit of Christmas event marks the start of the Christmas activity in the Village, at the beginning of December we welcome everyone to joins us around the Christmas Tree on the Green to sing some Carols and to see the lights being switched on. The event is extremely popular and we’d love to see you this year. Please visit our Spirit of Christmas page where we will be updating the plans as we have them.
During 2013 & 2014 we helped raise funds to bring a super Second World War experience to Finningley Church. The ‘We’ll Meet Again’ Mobile Museum came for two days so that local school children and member of the public.
